Cheltenham in Spring
Probably the most famous sporting festival in England occurs in mid-March. With daffodils in full bloom and race-goers swarming the streets of Cheltenham, the National Hunt Festival brings the Regency town to life! Spread over four days from 11 - 14 March, this amazing equestrian treat finishes with the 'blue-riband' event, the 'Cheltenham Gold Cup'. If you haven't been before - you must! The atmosphere is electric and the buzz of excitement can be felt miles away!
One of the area's most popular and fabulous wedding shows, the Cheltenham Park Hotel Wedding Show is fresh, fun and different from others. It's packed with inspiration from a wide range of over 40 exhibitors, live performers, demonstrations, tasters, catwalk shows and more. For the second of their 2014 Cheltenham Series the CSO under conductor David Curtis present a programme that showcases the best of Russian romantic writing. Tchaikovsky's Overture-Fantasy Romeo and Juliet depicts the themes of Shakespeare's tragedy in music both dramatic and forceful but also redolent of the love of this most romantic of all couples. Prepare to be enthralled by the rich, romantic sound of this exceptional orchestra who are then joined by Tamsin Waley-Cohen (violin) to play the same composer's Violin Concerto. Here is a chance to experience the lyrical beauty of her playing, already well known to Cheltenham concert-goers. The Tchaikovsky has writing of the most exhilarating and exciting kind which is perfectly suited to Tamsin's superlative technique.
Finally the orchestra will perform Borodin's Second Symphony. Considered to be the greatest of the composer's works it was many years in the writing before its first performance in 1879. It will be a fitting close this concert of Russian romanticism.
Just a short drive away in the magnificent Cathedral of Gloucester there is the opportunity to see this one off production of the spectacular world famous production of Jesus Christ Superstar performed by an all adult 200 strong cast. Along with the Queen's Philharmonic Orchestra from Tuesday 25 th - Saturday 29th March 2014 towards the end of March Cheltenham will come to life with a celebration of the written word during Cheltenham's Poetry Festival.
There will be lots of audience participation as well as readings. Themed events will be modern and traditional and there will be interaction between poets and musicians. Lots of new and exciting ways to enjoy poetry.
